CCTV in taxis and private hire vehicles could become a mandatory requirement under the English Devolution and Community Empowerment Bill.
The proposal would mark a significant shift from the current local licensing rules, where CCTV is not a compulsory requirement. Advocates for the move suggest that CCTV improves safety for passengers and drivers, assists investigations, and acts as crime deterrent, whilst those in opposition, raise fears about privacy, data protection, and the financial burden on drivers.
The government has not indicated when any CCTV requirement could be drafted or implemented, emphasising that the decision depends on the Bill’s progress through Parliament.
